This is a 170 sq.m new Sixth Form Centre for Longford Community School
in west London. It is arranged over two levels with new entrance and
WCs at ground floor (adding 45 sq.m) and the actual sixth form
accommodation at first floor level.
This project involved the fit out of an empty shell & core space
situated on an upper mezzanine of the canteen block. The ceiling height
was generous but not enough for two proper internal levels. Our
solution was to build a multi-coloured Formica clad plywood structure
that houses individual study booths over two levels by arranging the
cross section so that lower booths sit directly below without requiring
full headroom while sitting.
The structure is entirely self-supporting (no steelwork) and was
designed as something visually and aesthetically interesting that the
pupils and school staff alike can enjoy and feel inspired by.
A solid
blockwork wall separated the new sixth form from the canteen below – we
inserted a number of different sized portholes into this wall to allow
the students to look straight into the canteen below and feel more
connected with the rest of the school.
A new staircase and disabled lift platform was inserted – adjacent to a
new office for the head of sixth form.
“I've worked with many architects over the years but Jonathan’s ability to listen to our needs and turn them into crazy yet buildable designs is fantastic. He has created buildings and environments which captivate the minds of our staff and students.
The vision lead by our Head Teacher of delivering 21st century teaching environments has been turned into reality by Jonathan’s designs.
It is a pleasure working with him.”
Robert Glass,
Projects Director, Longford Community School.
